If you’re still a loyal Rose and Jack fan, prepare to get back in the ticket line: Titanic is returning to theaters. And this time, the legendary romance has a whole new dimension.
In 2010, director James Cameron told USA Today that he was in the process of converting his Best Picture-winning epic into 3D and the new version is finally here. Just in time for the 100-year anniversary of the real Titanic’s voyage you can relive the memories in a few short weeks.
While Hollywood is busy converting every new film into 3D, we think a 3D Titanic is one of the best ideas we’ve heard. First of all, we’re talking about James Cameron, whose big-budget interplanetary fantasy Avatar kicked off this 3D mania in the first place (and up-ended Titanic‘s “highest-grossing film of all time” status). He’s a notorious perfectionist, and if he can make you believe in giant blue aliens, you know his 3D shipwreck will look remarkably lifelike.
Then there’s the subject matter: One reason Titanic captivated audiences is that the movie really gives you a sense of being there. You’re practically on the ship, peeking through a porthole to spy on Rose and Jack. Now imagine those scenes in 3D: the lovers on deck, the waves sweeping through the cabins, the underwater dive through the wreck. You’ll practically need to towel off when it’s over.
Finally, there’s the heartbreaking romance at the heart of the movie. If you had to see anyone in Imax 3D, could you pick a more beautiful pair than Kate and Leo?
